Endeca is used by both our IT and Marketing departments. It is integrated with our eCommerce platform (Oracle Commerce/ATG) to aid in search and navigation functionality. It allows us to categorize products, accessories, add-ons, etc. which is helpful for up-selling and cross-selling within our product lines. Although it is not especially easy to use, it does solve a definite need for us.
  • It provides powerful search functionality.
  • It adds functionality for navigation which makes it much easier for customers to use our commerce site and find what they are looking for.
  • More documentation for the product would be very useful.
  • The product almost requires training in order to be able to use it effectively. Knowledge of HTML is a must.
If you have complex or highly-configurable products as we do, Endeca really fills a need. It really helps with navigation and the ability to drill down into options / accessories available based on selections already made. The indexing and search functionalities are also top-notch.

If your intended users of Endeca are not very tech-savvy or have HTML experience, you will almost certainly have struggles learning how to use the tool and make the most of it. Training will be necessary. Choose a solid implementation partner.

In my organization, we use Endeca to streamline and simplify the buying experience for our customers across all channels, and several departments are implicated in this and using Endeca. The main business problem it addresses is improving our conversion rate and increasing the number of customers who finalize their sale and minimizing the number that abandon the purchase near the last steps.
  • Simplifying our cross-channel selling strategy.
  • Improving search for customers.
  • Increasing sales from our multiple selling channels.
  • Steep learning curve.
  • Difficult to set up.
Endeca is better suited for companies that are aiming to sell across multiple channels and that will profit greatly from being able to offer their customers a smarter way to search, including recommending products during their search. If you have a simple offering for customers, then this program will be too complex for it to be worth undertaking.

  • Increase in revenue from improved search and recommendations for our customers.
  • Increase in revenue from cross-platform selling and reminders.
Oracle Endeca was the best option that we evaluated by far. It gave us the most flexibility and ability to meet our objectives and had features that were not offered by the competing products we evaluated, but which we very much wanted, and this was why we decided to go with Oracle Endeca versus another platform.

Endeca as a search/navigation/promotional vehicle is at the center of our ECommerce platform for the past 10 years, and allows our business team to manage product catalog, as well as hundreds of landing pages. It provides a fairly decent basic experience (not to mention pretty advanced feature set that you can tap into), offers robust performance and stability, and mature Java API. Continuously evaluating other products in the space, I still believe we made the right choice in the first place.
  • Landing page creation with Experience Manager
  • Operational performance and stability
  • Feature set
  • Business tool set
  • Product roadmap (Oracle Commerce V11)
  • No well defined commuity
  • Sizable learning curve
  • Feature set managed without involving the customer base
Endeca is a fantastic choice for an eCommerce retailer, as it offers the structure and the data funnel ideal for this type of engagement. One aspect you have to keep in mind is the licensing cost though.
Apache Solr, Lucene, Adobe Search and Promote, Google Commerce Search, Amazon Cloud Search
This product served us quite well, we've accumulated considerable knowledge around this engagement, has a positive experience dealing with Endeca (before acquisition) and Oracle in terms of customer support and other engagements.

Endeca drives our website search and category organization, navigation, and filtering. We use it to execute queries and organize results.
  • Does what you tell it to do
  • Its logical in its execution
  • IT needs extensive training to understand it
  • It is moderately flexible
This selection was over 10 years ago, but implementation and cost are always key factors. We have considered going open source many times but we have been running steady for so long that changing at this point would be a huge project.
  • There is no exact way to put a number to the impact it has had on our site and the sales, but from a user experience we know if has improved
We have not looked at alternatives other than open source, but it does have a leg up but it comes with a very high cost.
The cost and risk of changing now at the expense of delaying other projects is too great right now. We have a policy to evaluate all contracts before renewing to make sure we are in the right partnership for our needs and cost structure.

It is the search tool that we used for a large eCommerce retailer. We also utilize its rule manager, pagebuilder to build the site.

A later version was used in another team which was building an eCommerce site for another large retailer. The experience manager is used more often.
  • Basic search function, performance is good.
  • Rule manager is a rich feature that others do not offer.
  • XQuery is a powerful tool. Which allows you to exercise more logic one the server side.
  • Page builder. Adobe CQ5 is taking a better lead in this area with a simpler, much more intuitive offering.
  • Endeca's page builder is disappointing, hard to use. We used it to build the site, but the the client rarely uses it. It is just too complicated.
  • Partial update is a pain. The earlier version actually kills the application. We have to stop the partial update, which is very inconvenient.
  • Steep learning curve.
We use WebSphere Commerce as our main platform to deliver the eCommerce site.

When IBM starts to incorporate their software with Apache Solr, Endeca as a third party plugin search tool will not really be required as IBM has a built-in feature for using Solr. Endeca is less useful in that scenario, though it is much powerful than Solr.

It's difficult to imagine paying extra when there is a free, open-source search tool available out of the box.

We have found Solr to be much easier to learn and very handy to use. We like it much more than Endeca now.

Content management is not Endeca's specialty, and we already use either Alfresco or Adobe CQ5 for that.
  • It is a searching tool, and hard to estimate its impact on conversion.
  • It does its job regarding better searching; In terms of efficiency, it's hard to say: it has big learning curve. It requires a dedicated Endeca developer to work on it.
  • Compared to Solr, it is way too complicated.
  • solr
I described it earlier. Again, Solr is much simpler to learn, use and develop, much more intuitive. As an open source resource, Solr is a great tool. And because of adoption by IBM WebSphere Commerce, the decision to abandon Endeca is easy.
Again, because we upgraded our platform to WCS7 which has Solr built in, we no longer use Endeca. Although in our organization, we have a different team using it for another large online retailer. I do not recommend it if Solr is an option.
